Elementary
The winner of the
President’s Program Award for the elementary schools is
Chets Creek Elementary PTA in Jacksonville. Their program
entitled BUDs Club which is Brothers, Uncles, and Dads was
started with a few faculty members and dads to assist teachers
with small projects during preplanning period. Then at the start
of the school year, interest forms were placed in the student
information packets with invitations to attend the first BUDs
Club meeting. From there the BUDs Club members became an
important part of PTA and the Chets Creek community. They held a
BUDs Club Pancake Pigout to attend breakfast with their student
before the start of the school day. Besides spending time eating
a special meal with their students, table tents were placed
around the room with suggested questions to discuss during their
time together. Then in April the BUDs Club coordinated the
BUDding Readers program to coincide with the Spring Book Fair.
BUD Club members were invited to come to school and read to
classes before the start of the school day to show students that
real men read. The forming of the BUDs Club increased male
involvement and visibility at the school.
Secondary
Our top program at the
secondary level is Omni PTSA in Boca Raton. They created a
program called Extreme Makeover which was a one-day incredible
transformation of a local children's shelter for abused and
neglected children.
In one day, they
decorated the three houses at the facility in warm, kid-friendly
themes. The students came up with their own program "It has to
Blue" in order to collect blue sheets, pillowcases, and
comforters that would coordinate with the redecoration plan.
They also made a video that was broadcast to all classrooms to
promote the program.
The makeover included
over 150 volunteers of students, parents, teachers,
administrators, and local business owners. All materials and
refreshments were donated by community businesses. With
donations received they were able to purchase new furniture,
bedding, and accessories.
County Council
Our top program at for
county councils goes to Escambia County Council in Pensacola for
their Parenting the Millennium Child Program.
Since many parents are
confused about issues facing children today, they wanted to give
parents an overview. With Dr. Henry A Doenlen, a noted child and
adolescent psychiatrist and author, he explained the physical
changes that actually happen to a child at different stages in
their life focusing mostly on adolescent development. Following
that, Dr. Doenlen discussed ideas for dealing with behavior of
adolescents that parents often find annoying. The doctor
discussed danger signs for parents they needed to be on the
lookout for and when professional help may be necessary. The
program had universal appeal and benefited parents of students
in all grade levels especially middle and high school.
Congratulations to
All the Recipients!
