FLORIDA PTA 2008
LEGISLATIVE REGION WEEKS

Our children need your presence in Tallahassee in the 2008 Legislative Session.

Why?  Our legislative leaders will have to make some very tough decisions on how to fund education and programs that have an impact on children, especially with the downward trend of tax revenue.  Your expertise is needed to help them make the right vote that will have a positive impact on education, health, safety, recreational and other basic needs of Florida's children.

The most important thing to a legislator is YOU!  By coming to their office in Tallahassee the know that you are a constituent that is actively engaged in the legislative process.  Legislators listen to their constituents.  By exercising our collected PTA voice we have the grass roots power and enthusiasm to push the Florida PTA agenda through.

EVERY PTA MEMBER WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE PART OF THE TALLAHASSEE LEGISLATIVE TEAM!

WHAT TO EXPECT

You will start your legislative week well informed on what is happening in the session. The week will begin on Monday with an up-to-date briefing conducted by a member of the legislative committee, and Georgia Slack, our information specialist. The briefing will begin at 12:00 PM with the location to be announced at a later time.  You will receive an informational packet that will be beneficial to your successful legislative visits.  You will also have the option of deciding the number of days you wish to attend during your scheduled week.

WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED OF YOU

You will be responsible for the following:

· Accommodations (hotel)
Please make your reservations early as hotels in Tallahassee fill up quickly.  Price ranges are from $40 a night to $200 plus.  If you have a sales tax exemption number, you must pay with your PTA check and provide the hotel with a copy of your sales tax exemption number.  Your length of stay will depend upon you.  Some things to consider are; how many legislators you plan to visit, do you want to monitor the legislative session, testify before committees as well as monitor their meetings?

You will make your own legislative appointments before you arrive in Tallahassee.

  • Wear comfortable shoes

  • Bring a light jacket as committee rooms tend to be quite cool

  • Dress appropriately

· Send a brief report of your visit to Dawn Steward, Florida PTA Legislative Chair, 2130 Blossom Lane, Winter Park, Fl. 32789. This report will be of great value to the legislative committee.
